An Ode to the Screen Door

An Ode to the Screen Door

There are some sounds that snap me back to childhood summers. The music from a passing ice cream truck. The song we used to play over and over at the pool. The sound of a wooden screen door slamming against the frame.

Modern screen doors have hydraulic arms that prevent that slamming. But the old wooden doors just banged shut as you ran outside, your arms full of tasty bits and beverages to enjoy in the backyard.

Screen doors, for you apartment-dwelling urbanites, are a feature of rural and suburban homes designed to keep the bugs out of the house. My favorites are framed in wood, not fiberglass, aluminum or, offensively, plastic. Only wood gives you that satisfying THUD.

A simple design
A brightly painted frame frames the porch
Some folks get fancy
Some doors feature cut-outs for pets
This may not give you that slamming sound, but the mother of all screen doors is a folded one that opens your entire indoors to the outdoors.
