My Obsession with Airstreams

My Obsession with Airstreams

The rooftop of the Grand Daddy Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa features a trailer park. In the U.S. the term “trailer park” has less-than-positive associations, but this one is a collection of remodeled Airstream trailers, each designed into a comfortable hotel room.

I have been obsessed for years with the idea of remodeling an Airstream trailer.

Introduced by Wally Byam in 1936, the silver bullet space age design became an American icon. It prompts visions of life on the open road, traveling to forest and desert and coast.

In an age when air travel is fraught with danger (hello, COVID-19), traveling like a turtle with your home seems like a reasonable option. It’s the ultimate “glamping” experience.

The Airstream of today can be a humble or luxurious experience, depending on the furnishings and finishes. Here are some of my favorites.
