Portugal’s Wine Country
A lot of California’s landscape has become wine country over the last few decades. Orchards of walnuts and apricots have been turned over to cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. Some regions, however, epitomize the meaning of wine country. These regions are the source of some of my favorite wines.
Portugal, on the other hand, is entirely a wine country with 31 DOCs (Denominação de Origem Controlada), meaning Controlled Designation of Origin. Portugal has a dizzying 250+ native grape varietals, many of which are non-existent elsewhere.
